British Broadens Toxic Alcohol Poisoning Alert List with 11 Nations
The UK authorities has placed 11 further countries to its travel alert list regarding the risks of toxic alcohol poisoning from contaminated spirits.
This updated warning features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to evidence showing "a global increase in the number of confirmed occurrences" of industrial alcohol toxicity.
Only recently, the government had already added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing list, in response to multiple high-profile events like the fatal demise of 6 visitors in Laos in 2024.
Tourists are being advised that as little as minimal doses of methanol can cause vision loss or death within 12–48 hours.
What is Methanol and In what way is it Utilized?
Toxic alcohol is a harmful industrial alcohol often used in antifreeze, windscreen washer fluid, and thinner. This substance is not intended for drinking.
Although it is inherently formed during the creation of spirits, commercial firms lower it to minimal, harmless amounts for human consumption through the purification method.
However in certain nations, it is surreptitiously added into alcoholic drinks to cut costs, and as it is tasteless and odourless, it is impossible to notice.
Government Guidance for Travellers
Foreign Office minister the minister emphasized that all travellers should recognize the indicators of methanol toxicity.
"While drinking spirits in foreign countries, choose trusted places and refrain from unlicensed drinks or complimentary drinks," Falconer advised.
"If something seems unusual, such as a hangover that's way worse than normal or blurred eyesight – get medical help immediately."
The full register of countries identified as carrying a threat of industrial alcohol contamination currently features: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
