Transgender director Sam Feder's recent documentary "Increased Examination" provides a moving dual viewpoint – simultaneously an emotional profile of a prominent trans advocate and a sharp analysis of media coverage surrounding trans existence.

Judicial Battle at the Highest Court

This documentary follows ACLU lawyer Chase Strangio as he prepares for legal presentations in the important Supreme Court case US v Skirmetti. These arguments took place in December 2024, with the judiciary ultimately ruling in favor of Tennessee's case, effectively permitting bans on healthcare for trans youth to stay in effect across numerous US territories.

We made Heightened Scrutiny in just 16 months, stated Feder during a discussion. By contrast, my earlier film Disclosure took me half a decade, so this was very accelerated. Our purpose was to generate discussion so people would know more about the case.

Personal Story Amid Political Struggle

Although Feder presents a extensive critique of how mainstream publications have disseminated anti-trans rhetoric, the film's greatest contribution may be its compelling portrayal of Strangio. Normally a measured attorney in public appearances, Strangio displays his humanity throughout the film.

Intimate Scenes Beyond the Courtroom

This film also contains poignant moments where Feder moves beyond the constant legal battle, including sequences of Strangio vacationing in Italy and receiving a tattoo featuring words from activist Pauli Murray's poem "Prediction."

This body art sequence is one of my preferred parts in the movie, stated Strangio. Being tattooed is almost like a reflective process for me, to be totally engaged in my body and to view it as a vehicle for things that are important to me.

Physical Autonomy and Portrayal

The filmmaker's attention to lovingly showing Strangio adding to his body art underscores that Heightened Scrutiny is primarily about trans physical selves – not just those of youth who experience prohibition of their right to live authentically in their own bodies, but also the bodies of the various subjects who participate in the production.

I produce films with a message, and part of that is picking people who are exceptional and articulate enough to hold the camera, shared Feder. When people ask me what they should dress for an interview, my response is whatever makes you feel confident. This is crucial to me – as transgender individuals, we have difficulties so much with our image.

Legacy and Optimism

A key factor that causes Feder's documentaries shine is his evident skill for making his trans subjects feel at ease, acknowledged and valued. This approach fosters genuine chemistry between Feder and Strangio, helping the director to realize his aim of presenting Strangio as a multifaceted human being and providing a record for posterity of how resiliently he and fellow activists have fought for trans liberties.

I hope not people to find themselves in a place of incessant discouragement because of what the law is failing to provide us, shared Strangio. I strive to be in a method of using the law to lessen harm, but not to transform it into some type of conduit for our freedom potential.
